OperationalAdaptation.com is a forum for the exchange of information and research on how to achieve effective adaptation in war. Adaptation is arguably the most important characteristic of today's international security environment. Wars of the past were dominated by inter-state conflicts between clear-cut nation states and military forces. By contrast, the primary security threats of today come from non-state actors that do not follow systematic or predictable patterns of motives or behavior, and are characterized by rapidly changing strategies, tactics, and methods. Modern wars are therefore largely a war of adaptation and counter-adaptation, irrespective of asymmetries in military power. This poses important questions for how to achieve operational adaptation in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism campaigns.
